How to Open Apps Faster on the iPhone Duo Cover Screen

How to Open Apps Faster on the iPhone Duo Cover Screen

Quick answer: On the folded iPhone Duo, put your most-used apps where one tap reaches them. Keep them in one launcher widget on your first Home Screen page, add a Lock Screen widget with up to 4 apps, and turn on a Quick Launch bar that puts up to 5 apps in the Dynamic Island. WidgetLoft (formerly FolderMini) does all three with standard iOS widgets.

A foldable shines when it is open. Most of the day, though, it sits closed in one hand, and that is when swiping through pages of icons feels slow.

What changes when the iPhone Duo is folded

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone, announced on September 9, 2026. It has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, with the same aspect ratio on both, and it ships with iOS 27.1.

Opened, the Duo's Home Screen shows two pages at once. Folded, you are back to a single 5.4-inch screen that you will often use with one thumb. Every extra page swipe, search or trip to the App Library adds up.

The fix is simple: put the apps you open most in places you reach with one tap. WidgetLoft widgets are standard iOS widgets that work on any iPhone with iOS 18 or later, including iOS 27, so this is the same setup you would use on any other iPhone.

Step-by-step: set up one-handed app launching

  1. Make a group of your top apps. Install WidgetLoft, create a group in the Groups tab, and add the apps you open most by searching the App Store inside the app.
  2. Put the widget on your first Home Screen page. Long-press the Home Screen, tap +, find WidgetLoft and pick a size. A Small widget holds 9 apps and a Medium holds 21. Want bigger targets for your thumb? Choose large icons: 4 apps in a Small, 10 in a Medium.
  3. Add a Lock Screen widget. Long-press the Lock Screen, tap Customize, and add the WidgetLoft widget. It shows one row of up to 4 apps (3 with large icons). A tap asks you to unlock first, then opens the app.
  4. Turn on the Quick Launch bar. In WidgetLoft, go to Settings → "Dynamic Island & Live Activity", turn on "Quick Launch bar" (Beta) and pick a "Folder". Long-press the Dynamic Island to see a row of up to 5 apps, and tap one to open it directly. The same bar shows as a Lock Screen banner with up to 10 apps.
  5. Keep the bar running. Allow Live Activities for WidgetLoft in iOS Settings. iOS ends Live Activities after some hours, and WidgetLoft starts the bar again each time you open the app. There is more on this in our guide to apps in the Dynamic Island.

Which method is fastest?

| Method | Apps reachable | Taps | | --- | --- | --- | | Home Screen widget, Small | 9 (4 with large icons) | 1 | | Home Screen widget, Medium | 21 (10 with large icons) | 1 | | Lock Screen widget | 4 (3 with large icons) | 1, then unlock | | Quick Launch bar in the Dynamic Island | 5 | Long press, then 1 | | Quick Launch bar on the Lock Screen | 10 | 1, then unlock |

A mix works well: your 4 daily apps on the Lock Screen, your top 5 in the Dynamic Island, and a Medium widget on page one for everything else you use often. WidgetLoft is free to try with up to 6 groups and 21 library apps, enough to build this whole setup.

Common questions

When does the iPhone Duo come out? Pre-orders open October 16, 2026 and the phone is released on October 23, 2026, with iOS 27.1. Until then, cover screen advice, this guide included, is based on what Apple announced, not on daily use.

Does WidgetLoft work on the iPhone Duo? WidgetLoft widgets are standard iOS widgets that work on any iPhone with iOS 18 or later, including iOS 27. WidgetLoft has not been tested on the iPhone Duo and has no Duo-specific features.

Do I have to unlock before an app opens? From the Lock Screen widget or the Lock Screen banner, yes: iOS asks you to unlock first, then the app opens. Apps in the Dynamic Island and in a Home Screen widget open in one tap.
